I just got back from a four-day trip to San Francisco (3/25-28), which was a pleasant time to roam around the city, visit the SFMoMA, get some Top Dog at Berkeley, see Copeland for the first and last time, pick up a box of large egg tarts, and get my windshield splattered with bug juice, Pollock style. I feel recharged, ready to start Spring and work full time, play til I get exhausted! (And by 'play' I mean work on my EP, draw, read, play the guitar, design for fun, visit friends, watch 30 Rock, etc.)

More updates to come. It's been awhile!

Ever since I've been using my laptop more frequently for note-taking, my legal pads, aka yellow doodle pads, have been sadly neglected. I recently found myself drawing on the margins of a handout I was given, and I realized how poorly I drew the nose. And the face shape. Granted, I never had the chance to take a proper figure drawing class, so I practice by drawing from photos. I love to draw, and I find myself on the computer a lot, AND I'm pretty much done with school, so I figured I might start using my tablet for more than just design-related stuff. I've started up MINIDRW, and now I wanna do portraits. Cause people are interesting-looking. Your nose is probably really unique. And that mole, I wouldn't want to forget that. I like lush eyebrows, but don't discriminate against transparent ones. That dimple is probably killer.

Anyway, I'm gonna make it a practice to draw familiar faces first (for practice), and who knows whose face will be next.

Sometimes I prefer to draw words than write them.

MINIDRW: As long as I have my wacom tablet by me, I'm going to make some mini drawings of whatever strikes my mind. It was inspired by the brevity of twitter (yes, I got sucked in), the need to draw more frequently, to get in the habit of exercising creativity (be they simple things), and to let out what words can't express. I thought this would be a good means to focus that expression.

Kaki King's fifth album, Junior, will be released April 13. For those who are accustomed to her acoustic and tapping work, the Velour press release lets us in on the style of her newest album:

“I never made records for other people,” she says. “My evolution from record to record has been personal not commercial. For example there’s none of the 'guitar tapping' that I’m known for. There's not a single bit of it on the record except for a half a second on ‘The Hoopers of Hudspeth.’”

Listen to her new song "Falling Day" on Spin. If this is what the rest of the album is going to sound like, I can't wait to rock out to this. Just give me a floor, some space, and watch out.

While I was browsing through EE Storey's blog, I stumbled upon Soundscreen Design, a "product design company inspired by music," based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. Simple idea: art + music = special editions, apparel, curated series, and hard goods (poster frames, vinyl storage) for those who can't separate music from art, art from music.

They had an unpaid internship listing on their blog. If I were an underclassman in a NY-university, I'd be all up in their face about this position. Free coffee and doing what I love to do most.

Apparently this video has been out and everyone seemed to have seen it but me. Nonetheless: PES is a new second for me after Michel Gondry in terms of stop-motion/crafty/creativity. I love the visual and audible details that PES uses in his films. It's a huge compliment when Gondry comments admirably on your work in Paste Magazine (June 2008): "Clicking on a PES film is to open a safe and suddenly see a million ideas glittering and exploding. The only reason you close the door is to re-open it just after and discover what will pop this time." Interesting way to look at his films. I guess I found myself re-opening that safe with this video and PES's other work; you notice new nuances every time.

Talent & Cocoa Night was a night of loopy, clash-distorted, drone poppy, gaga-influenced, sing-songy, noizy-cozy, glocky, oceanic, bubbly, 'saxy,' dancey and po-po crashing live music with new and old friends; OD-ing on earl grey creme; candied-pecan toppings on the moistest pumpkin cake; moose and cow and mustachioed Hepburn decor; jokes about amphibian smoothies; abstract art; hidden talents; happy guests; and much, much more.

The Oceanographers know how to get you off your lazy asterisk and on the floor, on the floor, dancing to the song they wrote for you. Even po-po love 'em.
Roxy Shih sounds even better with some sangria.
Paul McEldowney can hypnotize you and your cat with his keyboard and pedals.
Sam Farzin electrocuted the audience, neighbors, and the cops with a one-hit wonder.

[I closed my eyes through most of my part.] Once again, I collaborated with The Oceanographers to perform "Flow" live, and it was good.

After the release of The Science of Sleep in August 2006, Deitch Projects hosted an installation of the sets and props from the movie, appropriately titled "The Science of Sleep; an exhibition of sculpture and creepy pathological little gifts", from September 6-30, 2006. I love this movie not just for its concept of dreams and reality (I'm fascinated by dreams), but because of all the nuances and craft that went into making this film so endearing.

Me and bro at the Freedom Bell in San Pedro

Today my dad, brother and I hung out at Palos Verdes, San Pedro, and Redondo Beach after visiting my grandfather's memorial site. My brother is leaving for ~~South Carolina~~ Oklahoma for basic training tomorrow early morning so I think I'll be staying up all night to see him off (around 4am!). I'm sad about his departure, but I'm also pretty excited for him since he himself is excited to go. I'll definitely miss him a lot but I'm also looking forward to writing him and sending him pictures while he's training (no internet access, boo). Meanwhile, I'm sure he's gonna get more buff and tan, probably cooler too with his uniform and all. Goodbye tennis-cap hair. Goodbye mountain-eyebrows. Goodbye mini-bowling-ball arms. I just happened to find out about Joseph Mann while browsing Design For Mankind. I love stop-motion things--one day I wish to be on set with a stop-motion animator and just sigh and observe--and I love what he does with his toes! (I think the ping pong part got to me.)

A little thing about toes:
I have a friend who told me that I have chubby toes. Being a Wikipedia nerd, he tried to look for the scientific name of this chubby-toes physicality. The spotlight of that evening shone down on my already-shy toes. Since then, I've become more self-conscious of my little piglets. Then this summer, another friend pointed them out as well, saying, "You have fun toesies--they look like playdough!" That canceled out the self-consciousness factor. I can live with the fact that my toes look like playdough since playdough brings fond memories of childhood. Maybe that can inspire a toes-related project like Joseph--I'm sure he got to know his toes a lot better.

Butterflies in my tummy

This was a beautiful sunset with a triangle cloud.

I woke up unusually early this morning before the sun was up. Just some thoughts in my head. I put on a recent playlist I compiled for moments when I just need to be musically refreshed.

My friends Dom and Daniel at Yellow Black & White recently came out with their new summer line, The Summer of Thought. Designed by their friend, Danny Jones of YASLY (if you remember my previous post on Moustache May...), and Daniel himself. Well, aren't they fresh.

Also, my friends told me that the t-shirts with my simple design on 'em were included in the batch of tees that are being sold in a little t-shirt boutique called Urban Addict...in France. It's amazing that they can get their tees on the other side of the world, and it's amazing to be a small part of that!

A little bit of LAUP

Our team with awesome hosts, Dennis and Trinh

LAUP (pronounced "lay-up") is a six-week Los Angeles Urban Project through InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Our team of six, from UC Irvine and CSU Fullerton, worked as summer camp counselors at Downey Recreation Center, playing sports and games and going on field trips with the kids. Our team lived in Lincoln Heights, and our personalities together were far from mild--I love our team. We danced a lot, we were told to quiet down several times by our host couple's housemate, we drew on each others' faces, and we cut each others hairs to name a few things that went on in the house. Amidst the fun, I'd say this summer experience has impacted me a lot in the way I view God and people. In the evenings after our workdays, we'd have large group gatherings to learn about some of the underlying issues in poor neighborhoods--the gangs, drugs, violence, poor education system, teen pregnancies, racism, etc. It's quite overwhelming to have this all exposed in one session; it's easier to ignore these issues, to go on with middle-class living. A question I asked was, what am I doing here, what difference can I make?

But what struck me was God's heart for the oppressed. I got to see in scriptures his desire to partner with people that will share his heart in freeing the oppressed, in bringing justice and bringing hope in his provision. As for my own doubts: as God revealed more of himself to me, I became excited to work with the kids, probably the first time I ever felt that way (I was more of the observant, "kids-are-cute" kind of person, but not knowing how to hold a baby properly). It was through my doubts and weaknesses that he proved himself reliable.

Even now, I've been having some doubts about my writing. As a Literary Journalism major, I felt like I hit a ceiling, maybe my own ceiling of doubt, where I couldn't write a strong story. But maybe it's at this point where God can shine through my weaknesses and doubts. As my teammate prayed for me, she felt God had a word for me, that my weapon against ignorance and injustice is writing. It was further confirmation and encouragement that made me decide to give Lit.J. another shot rather than giving up on it. The future is pretty daunting at times--there are so many unknowns. But in that way it's pretty exciting to walk alongside God and see where he leads me.

So Cal loves M83 and M83 loves So Cal.

Before the 5/20 Wednesday show in Pomona, my friend and I went to the Glass House record store next to the venue and I found a Gabriel & Dresden CD for only a buck (sans CD case though)! (Their mix "Beautiful Things" with Andain is one of my favorites.) We also went across the street from the Glass House to a vintage clothing shop called La Bomba and I picked up a nice plaid shirt for $14. I would buy all my tops there if I could; they have a great selection of clothing.

But I digress.

At the show, DJ White Marsh from the Inland Empire, CA opened the set with a nice mix of Bon Iver, Ulrich Schnauss, Crystal Castles, among others I don't remember or haven't heard. It got the people ready for the next act:

James Yuill, from London.

James knows how to get a party started without detracting from the heartfelt lyrics of his music. It was something I haven't experienced before, completely danceable with body-rumbling bass set to beautiful words and acoustic guitar accompaniment. He's a really nice guy, he was at the merch table after the show, signing things out to each person's name.

The show was nothing short of epic: the gradual build-up at the beginning of their set exploded into that happy moment where you hear your favorite songs live for the first time and it's exactly how you imagined it, only 100 times more atmospheric, breathable, and room-/gut-filling. The drummer quickened the pace of some beats, making it that much more of an adrenaline rush. The encore was roaring for them to come back on stage, and when they concluded the set, we were standing on our toes and gave the biggest applause we could because we all agreed that they blew us away.

Ponytail @ UC Irvine

On Saturday evening, May 16, about seventy people crowded into Social Science Trailer 103 at our campus to see Ponytail, I Heart Lung, and our very own Moon Pearl. I got a chance to meet some new people (regular Acrobatics Everyday show attendees) and talk with Chris Schlarb about how he recorded and compiled various sound bits for his album "Twilight and Ghost Stories."

There was an old static-ky TV glowing behind Moon Pearl's opening set. Spoons, forks, and other second-hand silverware were dumped in front of us to participate by clinking them together along to the music by Sam Farzin and Paul McEldowney. See Figure 02. I thought that was very nice, it sounded very pleasant and it felt very pleasant. Nice glockenspiel usage too.

Then Chris Schlarb and Tom Steck, aka I Heart Lung, played for us a "post-jazz post-shred post-life ambient skronk," in the words of Sam, I think. Lots of post post post business, but can I just say, Tom's specialized drumming and Chris's spidery fingers put me in a mood to sway and think about why I am alive with a corner-smile on my face. See Figure 03.

And finally, Ponytail set the trailer ablaze. There were a variety of sensual pressures, if I may:

lots of bodies bumping and crashing against each other
sweaty, slippery arms sliding off each other
the occasional 'ouch'-but-it's-ok bump to the head and sides
the occasional 'ahh...'-that-was-the-99-cents-store-beach-ball bump to the head (my favorite sense of the night)
cool water intentionally splashed over our heads
sticky shirt and clingy jeans
ear tunnels going slightly numb
thick, moisturized breathing, unless you're used to Florida weather packed into a classroom trailer
inner happiness in my pulse

I chatted with Molly a little after the show about school, traveling and my lack thereof, how the band came about, art, film, summer plans. She's interested in lo-fi video stuff, but would also like to do some more refined filming one of these days. She's nice!

I was in the 8th grade when I discovered the design firm that would change my artistic life. Perhaps it was a one-liner from a beautiful CD booklet that led me to Asterik Studio, a band of creative designers (then: Don, Demetre, Ryan, Greg, Michael) who were pumping out memorable album art of many of the bands I was into in my teens. I still remember their khaki-toned website with tiny magenta type, the nearly-asterisk A* logo, and their list of clients (whenever you can recognize a good number of one's clientèle, that means follow up on these designers because they'll be designing your favorite bands' albums, heh). From L.A. they moved to Seattle, eventually parted into two groups (Invisible Creature and Wonderful Union), and now I want to hover my way over to Washington just to be near the Creature's muse. Haha. It's great that the duo has a variety of clients; their styles are so versatile.

Much respect to my design role models. :)

The movie was nothing short of amazing. I don't know much about Star Trek, other than it was used in one of my freshmen lectures on globalization, but this movie reinvented the way I see the old, ashy, hairband-over-the-eyes/Reading-Rainbow-guy, dry feel of the TV series (sorry if I offended fans, I'm new to this). I think it was this young, good lookin' Spock. mm

Art Auction @ Beyond OC

Yesterday, May 2, was my brother's birthday (!) and Beyond OC, a fundraiser night for UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton's InterVarsity groups. For the art auction, I submitted the first three pieces (the last one I kept). The robot drawing also came with the actual tin wind-up robot in a combo deal.
